TIPS FOR great BLACK & WHITE Photos

I don’t know about you, but there’s something truly special about black and white photography. Maybe it goes back to when I first started learning on 35mm and medium format film, or perhaps it’s the magic that happens when we strip away colour—suddenly, we see the world in a way only photography can capture.

There’s something timeless about the way black and white allows texture to take centre stage and preserves people in such an unforgettable, elegant way.

The why isn't as important as the how. So, I’d love to share some tips with you, to help move beyond filters and start mastering the art of black and white photography for yourself!

1. Use contrasty light:

If you’re aiming for a dramatic black and white portrait, start by using more contrast in your lighting than you might normally choose. This helps create a stunning gradient from the highlights on the face to the shadows across the body, giving your image depth and impact.

2. Negative fill:

To enhance shadows in your black and white portraits, use negative fill. Place dark materials—like black foam boards or fabric—on either side of your subject to absorb light and deepen the shadows. This technique adds rich contrast and gives your images a moody, sophisticated look, plus it makes cheekbones look amazing!

3. Tweak the exposure in post-production:

To perfect your black and white images, start by adjusting the exposure in post-production. Use the highlights and shadows sliders to fine-tune the balance - boost the highlights to brighten key areas and deepen the shadows for contrast, really accentuate the textures. Plus, I always aim for skin to be light-mid grey depending on their natural skin tone.
