CAMERA BASICS

Ever wanted to pick up a camera and understand what all the letters and symbols on the top mean? Well, today I want to share some tips so you can feel more comfortable when you move beyond the cell phone photo.

When you look at the camera dial, all those options can be overwhelming at first, but understanding them will help you unlock the full potential of your digital camera. Most digital cameras and even some phones have these options, so once you learn what each one does, it doesn’t matter what camera you have—you’ll be ready to roll.

Automated Camera Modes
Let’s start with the simple automatic options: these modes are perfect for beginners because they handle the technical stuff for you, so you can just enjoy shooting.

  • Auto (Automatic Mode): Takes care of everything, making it super easy to get started.

  • Macro: The little flower symbol, ideal for capturing close-up details.

  • Landscape: The mountain symbol, designed to keep the whole scene in focus.

  • Night/Party: Usually marked with a star or moon symbol, perfect for low-light shots.

  • Sport: The running man symbol, which freezes movement.

  • Portrait: Typically represented by a head and shoulders icon, this mode creates that beautiful blurred background.

Advanced Camera Modes
Ready to take things up a notch? Advanced modes give you more control and let you get creative.

  • A (Aperture Priority): Lets you set the aperture while the camera adjusts the rest, helping you learn about depth of field (the amount of an image that is in focus).

  • S (Shutter Priority): Focuses on controlling motion by letting you pick the shutter speed while the camera handles the other settings.

  • P (Program Mode): Offers you the chance to repeat previous settings, giving you a quick way to shoot with familiar adjustments.

AND lastly M (Manual Mode): The Ultimate Control
Manual mode is the most important mode for professional photographers. It allows you to choose each setting, giving you the ability to achieve results the camera’s onboard computer wouldn’t even dream of.
